Hello
I had my ankle fused 7 months ago now. Its been a long hard haul. I'm hoping my gait will improve to be more or less normal at the walk (this is what is 'written' in some of the more optimistic articles i have read and is the expectation of the surgeon). At this point I've graduated from walking like a lame duck on a bad day to just a noticeable limp

this is progress! Partly the limp is due to some ongoing pain that I should not be experiencing and also some leg shortening. Also, my foot was straightened as it was deformed and pointing down from years of arthritis, and i'm having problems adapting to the new angle.
As I've tried to adapt I've had pain in the opposite hip and then pain in the knee of my affected leg.
I've been posted off to a podiatrist to get some orthotics and I'm frantically working on some exercises someone posted on this forum. I think the exercises are helping. There has been a suggestion the implants may need to be removed and I'm not keen at all.
I suspect the outcome will vary according to individual circumstances. For me the fusion was a last resort as I could hardly walk without huge amounts of drugs, so a limp does not bother me. but painfree and limpfree without any pills would be awesome and supposedly what I should hope for

.
Good luck!
