Smile Osteoarthritis of both hips

Tomorrow I will be seeing an Orthopedist to discuss my hip osteoarthritis.
I have it in both hips, but they can only do surgery on one at a time.
I am a Senior (69) and was wondering what had to be done weeks before the actual surgery as far as testing, etc.? Also, how long do you have to stay in the hospital after the surgery? Does Medicare cover a lot of this surgery?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Osteoarthritis of both hips

Hello Mary
I too have just been diagnosed with osteo in both hips, one bad enough for sure to need a replacement. I have to wait 6 months just to see an orthopedic surgeon and then another 3 or 4 for the surgery. All I've been told so far, is to do what I can each day and the physiotherapist gave me a few leg exercises to do each day also. I too would like to know more about prep before the surgery, how others have coped while waiting..I find myself quite anxious at times because of this... I am 54 and my doctor completely missed my hip arthritis..said it was pain coming from my degenerative disks in my spine. I've changed to a new Dr. now, so hopefully won't have this kind of thing happen again. I've always walked, kept my weight down and appeared healthy, which is probably why he missed it. Although I did complain to him for the past year about groin and inner thigh pain and he kept saying the same thing over and over.

Re: Osteoarthritis of both hips

I am so sorry you are in such pain. I was able to manage the pain with Advil although the doctor gave me pain pills also. I manage to get around with a cane for now. I love the holidays so didn't want to have any surgery at this time. You are so young to have these medical problems. It sounds like they don't want to do the surgery because of the brain aneurysm. Did you see a specialist for the brain aneurysm?

Re: Osteoarthritis of both hips

I also had the groin pain years ago and thought it was just a muscle pull after walking. Over the years the osteo has gotten worse in the hips, but surgery is the last resort for me. Because I can still manage to get around I have been postponing the surgery. I know a lot of people that had the surgery tell me they wish they did it sooner because it was such a relief. Keep in touch and let me know how you are doing. Happy Holidays to you.

Re: Osteoarthritis of both hips

yes, no one will touch me, with a inoperable aneurysm...I have been to so many different docters for both things..Now I just go to a pain docter..My arthur started long before my aneurysm,,It first started in my hands, I got those funny looking knodes in my fingers,, then it just went nuts..It really got worse about 5 years ago and steadily each year got worse and worse..I tried to go shopping for a couple hours the other day..By the time I got back to my truck, I was in SO much pain...I just wanted home,,Both my legs, and both bottoms of my feet were in so much pain..I just did not know what to do, besides the usual hip pain..but I crawled in bed and just laid there in agony for about 24 hours..then it lessened up some..My last MRI showed that I have a ruptered disk moderated to severe,,But of course nothing I can do about it,,Everyone is so afraid of my head problem..They do not want to put me asleep..But It is OK, I have had it almost 9 years, I have acceppted it..It is just so hard at times to live with all this pain on a daily basis,,Hugs to you, Will be praying your surgery will give you great releive and joy, happy holidays, Cindy

hello Cindy
To be so young and have all the physical pain from your illness's is terrible. I hope the drugs keep you comfortable enough and allow you to function normally throughout the day. I guess that would be very difficult with daily headaches though!!!!
Do you have family to look after also? I don't have kids, it's just me and my husband and our dogs, so that makes it easier to get things done during the day.
Take care of yourself and thanks for sharing your story.

Re: Osteoarthritis of both hips

Hi thomasinaa,
No thank god All my children all grew up when this started my youngest was 16,,And it was hard on her for awhile,,But now she is 25 and has 2 small children..and helps me out alot..My drugs help out alot (as long as I don't over do ) From a scale to 1-10 I am at a 5..but without the drugs I would be at a horrible 10, So I take the 5 happily..So now I just have my hubby and 2 old dogs and big ole farm house..So it isn't so bad..I try not to take nothing for granted,,Thanks for asking hugs, Cindy
