Unhappy Hip arthritis and labral tear - guidance please

Hello everyone,

I hope someone can shed some light, see if what I post makes sense and if I'm covering all angles. I have always been an athletic person, played soccer for may years. I torn medial/lateral menisci left knee 4 years ago. I am currently 40 years old.I had arthroscopy done well tolerated with 3-4 months rehab and everything was fine thereafter. I stopped playing soccer, however I did continue running/jogging etc. 5 months ago I started having pain on my right hip. I had an x ray done which showed mild/moderate arthritis. I had a MRI done as well and it showed arthritis, labral tear and paralabral cyst. I went to see the same ortho dc who performed my knee arthroscopy and he sent me for rehab for about 2 months. I finished the rehab and I would say the discomfort has not gone down. I actually started feeling pain in my knees and noticed recently that my wrists make crackling noise. I went ahead and saw a reumatologist, drew blood for ESR, ANA and RF and all came back negative. The rheumatologist suggested I take Mobic for one month along with glucosamine/MSM and see him in 4-6 weeks. I also set up an appt with a hip ortho specialist since the other doc doesn't handle hip problems. I am not sure if the other joint pains are due to the change in weather/steming from my hip arthritis (osteoarthritis in other joints?)or I am developing rheumatoid arthritis? Can someone make sense out of all of this? Your feedback is appeciated!!! Thank you all

Re: Hip arthritis and labral tear - guidance please

Just got back from vacation....sorry it's taken so long to respond.

It sounds more like your developing osteoarthritis. Once we hit our 40's we start to pay for all the sports we did as kids and teens. No one warns us what might be ahead when we're young(and would we believe them anyhow?)

Osteoarthritis(OA), the arthritis of aging and wear and tear is poorly understood. No one knows why it starts young in some people and late in others. And in some people it hurts and in others it is mild discomfort. Has to do with your genes, I suspect. I have early onset OA and it started in my later teens/early 20's. I had already had multiple joint surgeries when I was your age and now at 59, I've had 22 orthopedic surgeries for my joints. Knees were replaced at 47. My neck is titanium. Pins all over the place. Then I got RA on top of it 6 years ago.

I suspect that the labral tear is not complete or they would be doing surgery....or has that been suggested and why you're seeing the hip doc? I've had the right side rotator cuff tendons(shoulders) fixed but the left side has all partial tears so they are waiting for one of them to finally "pop" before they operate again. The tears were caused by the tendons rubbing over a big bone spur that cut into them.

Keep taking the meds and see if they help. If not, there are all sorts of combinations of drugs to ease the pain.

And keep working with the rheumy. It doesn't sound like RA but you never know. That is something that can take months and even years to figure out. They diagnose RA by a pattern of symptoms and not with a blood test( the blood test is only 1 of 7 criteria for RA and you need 4 of 7).

Let me know what the hip doc says. And if you haven't already, check out the Knee&Hip board here.

hugs...........Jenny

Thank you Jenny,

You are a real trooper!!! I hope you enjoyed your vacation. I am going to see the hip doctor so he can see the MRI and explain arthroscopic surgery (maybe resurfacing?). By the way, I have been experiencing crackling in some joints and feel heat (burning sensation) in my legs. Are these signs of inflammation? or side effects from the MObic?

Thanks again,

God bless you

Re: Hip arthritis and labral tear - guidance please

Hi Massey,

I actually had an x-ray done first because my right side hip was hurting me specially when I was doing activities. The x-ray showed mild to moderate arthritis but i could not believe this was causing the back of my legs weak. I went ahead and asked a neurologist to set me up with and MRI (since I worked for a hospital in NYC)and sure enough, the MRI showed labral tear with aparalabral cyst. Now my ortho thinks the arthritis is causing more of this pain than the labarl tear. Now I am going to see a hip specialist and see what he thinks. In the meantime, other joints are starting to hurt also. This makes me more concerned that i may have arthritis in other parts of the body and I am going downhill. I'll keep you posted. let me knwo how things shake out

Take care

Ed

Re: Hip arthritis and labral tear - guidance please

I get the pain in the groin area and in the back of my buttocks. It's like a cramp in the butt all day and I can't sit for any period of time. There is a click ,pop , crackle noise in the front of the hip/groin area . That was a sign of the labral tear. Now I'm trying to find out why I have this pain in the rear. Does any one have any idea what would be causing the pain there. Maybe someone has had the same experience.
