Question My husband has been to his first appt with the RA specialist.

My husband has been to his first appt with the RA specialist. Nothing was decided at that time. They discussed a few things abt the disease in general which eased his mind. More blood tests were ordered and he is to return in a week for the results. He is still on the low dose of Prednisone (5 mg daily) for now--he didn't change that med-- and we are hoping for more info with this upcoming appt next week. He is handling the dx well but is looking forward to the new results so that if a treatment plan is in order, he can get established on it. His flares are coming more often. They last for 24 to 36 hrs and then start to fizzle out. This one was right shoulder and hand. Last week was left hand. Doc did say that they could move around.
He is more tired lately. He had a commercial film shoot at the zoo in New Orleans early this morning and when he got home at 3, he took to the sofa and went to sleep, where he is still sleeping. But he had to get up at 3 AM for the gig, as he was going to be in the early morning commuters and didn't get to bed till 11 PM on Wed night, so he should be tired. But he is definitely needing more sleep. We remain cautiously optimistic--he likes his doc, and sometimes that is half the battle.
I have been busy with volunteer service with the LLS and haven't had much time to be on computer. And I can't seem to locate the "share post" area!!
I am still a bit lost on this site as it is so large compared to what I am used to with my deal with the LLS. I reckon just bare with me till I have a chance to get on here and tackle some things and learn my way around better! .....Tonight is one of my "can't sleep night" so I finally have gotten up!
Many blessings and best wishes to all of you. I thank you for your support and expertise.
mimi (I think this post should be in the share post area, but couldn't find it!)

Re: The Purpose of life?

Hi There,
Welcome to the board and confusion
I think this is a poast on The Purpose of Life, not RA but it so happened a while ago I responded to that post as well, so today I got yours.
Anyway, RA is a wicked disease. The treatment with prednisone, needs, in y opinion, be monitored closely, as the effect is weight gain if overused and I believe a bad influence on bones. Please do further research.

The Road Back Foundation in Cambrige, MA which uses minociclyne, antibiotics for the treatment of RA because of its antiniflammatory NOT antibacterial qualities.
Dr. Threnthem in Boston (sp is clos) is one of the rheumatologists.

They are all patients who have suffered through this mysterious illness and very empathetic. They will give you a list of local doctors if there is one.
Good luck.
Rodica

Re: My husband has been to his first appt with the RA specialist.

There is LOTS that can be done to control RA these days - "triple therapy" with weekly methotrexate and daily chloroquine and sulphasalazine can be extremely effective in totaly suppressing inflamation and preventing joint damage, but its important to get in under control early, before joint damage occurs.

Simple Tylenol can give some releif when having a "flare" and usualy doesnt interact with other RA meds, but check with your pharmacist, and follow the dosage directions on the bottle
