Question Is this Arthritis? Doc said yes without exam

I'm in a lot of pain. I'm sure mine might be mild compared to some. My doctor has assumed I have arthritis because of my age(I'm 50). I don't have aches and pains. I have serious pain that wakes me up at night and interferes in everything I do. It is mainly my hip area and low back that hurts badly. I take Tramadol for pain but this is not helping anymore and I'm sure I take to many, just to get some relief. I don't know what to say to the doctor? Is there a test he should run? This is just nuts. Anyone have any suggestions?

If your doctor is so sure it is arthritis without checking things out(and most people do have some at 50)then I would advise you to ask for a referral to a rheumatologist who will give you a real evaluation. There are many kinds of arthritis and they are treated differently. Just giving you a pain-killer is not finding out the source of the problem. The pain you describe could be due to many things beside arthritis. Good luck on getting to the bottom of this.

Have you even had x-rays of the area? Go and see an orthopedist or a rheumatologist and they'll figure out if you have arthritis, and if so what kind, or if you have another issue, like a back problem. Pain in your lower back and hip could be from sciatica, which in itself is from a back injury.
