I use massage my ankle and toe(s) when they hurt, and if swollen I use a bag of frozen veggies or an ice bag. If not swollen, I use my heating pad after I massage the painful areas. Stay off of your ankle/toes as much as possible when in severe pain. My ankle has given out on me before when I tried to walk when it was in pain and swollen. If you can, take ibuprofen for the pain and inflammation. If you have not been to your doctor, you need to so you can document activity and see if anything is setting off the pain, and so your doctor can prescribe appropriate meds for your arthritis.
