has anyone had polymyalgia rheumatica?

The ER suggested that my husband has polymalgia rheumatica and we're wondering if anybody knows anything about this form of arthritis as we've never heard of it but he has all the symptoms. Going to find out in a couple weeks from a rheumatologist.

Re: has anyone had polymyalgia rheumatica?

I had PMR back around 2002...and it took my doctor ages to diagnose it. Is your husband on prednisone? PMR is diagnosed by elimination of other diseases. When the patient is given Prednisone the symptoms usually clear up immediately. I was on Prednisone for about a year, most of that time getting slowly weaned back off of it.

I haven't had any further symptoms. The hardest part for me was being in pain for a long time before my doctor finally figured out what was going on.

The one danger of having PMR is the risk of developing giant cell arteritis which is a type of vasculitis. It is a disease of the blood vessels. If it affects the eye, one can lose vision almost overnight...so it is a scary possibility. This affects women more than men, so perhaps it won't be a worry for your husband.
