Aspergers and hobbies

Hello,

I am 36 years old. I was diagnosed with Aspergers about 4 years ago. Is is normal for people with Aspergers to not have hobbies or intererests? Outside of reading and watching television, I have no real interests or hobbies. The idea of doing things such as skiing, golf, beach volleyball and mountain biking appeal to me, but when I am doing them I don't enjoy them. I don't excel at doing those things either. Can asbergers effect my ability to excel at things as well?

Kevin

Hi Kevin -

My daughter is your age and also has Asperger's. Life is extremely hard for her, and she has a difficult time coping with everything. She also has NO hobbies, and has always been poor at any and all sports. She used to like movies, but doesn't go anymore. She also used to like shopping and looking nice, but doesn't care anymore. She has been unable to hold a job much longer than a couple of months, and also unable to maintain a relationship. I hope you're doing better than she is?

Scarlett so what does your daughter like doing? Why does she struggle keeping jobs? It must be hard for you to watch her struggle. I wonder sometimes if one of my boys has a touch of something. He has no hobbies either and it worries me. It's hard when you're not good at sports. Life and socialising is much easier for kids who are good at sport.

Re: Aspergers and hobbies

My one good friend has Asperger's and doesn't have any clear-cut "special interests." He has some interests/hobbies, but they are just to the normal degree- not obsessive and extreme. I, on the other hand, have the "special interests" as my most obvious Asperger's symptom. Every Aspie is different and has a different profile of symptoms. Some have very severe social deficits and don't have the presence of "special interests"; others, myself included, don't have horrible social deficts but are extreme in their "special interests" and their ramblings about said "special interests." If you have been officially diagnosed and fit the DSM-IV criteria for AS, chances are that it's an accurate diagnosis. You don't need every symptom to qualify as having Asperger's.
