SLEEP problems!! Poor eating habits, young adult with Asperger's

Hi
For years and years, son has problems getting to sleep which means when he has to function 'normally' he is sleepy, lethargic and cranky.
He is now 23 yrs old and it is as bad as ever. He is always late for appointments but somehow manages to get by.
How to overcome this problem? Any suggestions?

Oh, and his eating is poor. Doesn't eat much and isn't bothered.
It really is distressing and depressing for us, his parents.
Are life skills coaches useful for young adults learning to overcome aspies?
I know alot of questions from overwhelmed parents!!!

Re: SLEEP problems!! Poor eating habits, young adult with Asperger's

Hi Calore,

I have no experience with this particular problem with my son but just thought I'd make a suggestion.

My sister has had sleep problems for years, only getting about 3 - 4 hours a night but recently she has developed hay fever and has started taking a remedy for it. Since she's been taking the tablets she has been sleeping really well. I've also read that ASD might be linked to auto immune problems so taking a hay fever remedy might work for your son too. If you do decide to try it make sure he doesn't take the non-drowsey ones!

One of my sons who has autism had trouble falling asleep too. A psychiatrist he was seeing recommended giving him melatonin. You can buy it over the counter. My son went from taking 3 hours to fall aslepp to being asleep within about 20 minutes.
