Can any explain Asperger's? - Asperger's Syndrome Message Board

We had an appointment yesterday for a med check and in discussing some of the things that are going on with my son's doctor, we may be getting re-evaluated for Asperger's Syndrome instead of ADHD. I am doing an internet search but hoped to hear from parent's who might have experience with this. Thanks a bunch!

Hi,
Asperger's syndrome is, in a nut shell, a very mild form of Autism. It is often mistaken for ADD and/or ADHD, and, occasionally, mood disorders. You'll probably find a lot of info on a site on Autism or Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD is the umbrella term that Asperger's and Autism fall under).

Thanks for the input. I have read up on it and am basically wondering what to look for. My son seems to have a "text book case" of ADHD but from what I have been reading, he also seems to in a very mild way, have symptoms of Asperger's. We are re-evaluating with his pediatrician and a new psychologist.

HEY! I'M SO GLAD TO FIND OTHERS AS CONFUSED ABOUT ASPERGER! I HAVE RESEARCED IT A LOT (MY 5YO WAS DX'D 6 MO.'S AGO. ARE THERE ANY "PARTICULAR THINGS" THAT YOU WERE WANTING TO KNOW OR COMPAIR? I THINK THAT IT HAS TO BE THE MOST CONFUSING AND "QUIRKY" DIAGNOSIS! I STILL VASOLATE BETWEEN, "HE'S JUST IMMATURE, AGRESSIVE AND HYPER", TO "HE IS SOOOOOOOOOO ASPERGER! I'D LOVE TO COMPARE NOTES WITH SOMEONE BECAUSE A LOT OF TIMES BOOKS REALY CAN'T ARTICULATE IT! AT LEAST NOT FOR ME. I REALLY APPRECIATE INPUT BY A MEMBER NAMED LANK

! I SO WANT TO KNOW HOW MY SON FEELS AND WHAT HELPS AND DOES NOT. I JUST WANT HIM TO BE HAPPY.

Hi,

I'm just wondering if your son has an intense,"urgent," obsessive interest in any objects in particular, ex. clothes driers, trains, computers, etc., and does he get extremely upset when you try to stop him from obsessing?

Many Aspergers (and non-Aspergers) kids are completely fascinated by ordinary objects. To be Apspergers, the kid's life has to be dominated by the obsession.
