I have just been diagnosed with Aspergers :(?

Hello there. Well where to start off. I'm 18 years old. I have always felt different all of my life. My perspective on things were different to anyone around me, and I was often and still do get upset over to what seems to others completely irrational matters (Things like complaining for hours about how a customer in the shop where I work doesn't want to do small talk with me Etc which my parents happen to find bizarre)

I am also very socially distant and although I have the odd acquaintances who would smile & say Hi to me if they saw me in a public place I don't really have any proper friends. People who have liked me over the years I have not made the effort with them, on the otherhand I made an effort and got very upset over the people who ignored me in the first place.

This social distance from others has made me rather depressed. I can never maintain friendships as people always get put off by me because I either ramble on about a fixated subject I am interested in (Say like Per Se if I became interested in Aliens - I would go on and on about it and nothing else - And a month later I will start rambling about something else) -

Is there actually any hope for a social life for people with Aspergers?

Re: I have just been diagnosed with Aspergers :(?

There is wonderful hope for folks diagnosed with AS who are willing to learn about themselves and accept themselves and accept NT's as they are too. Find a life skills coach (rather than a regular counselor) who understands about AS. Check out Jessica Kingsley Publishers (on line) for resources for your age group. A good book is: The Journal of Best Practices A Memoir of Marriage, Asperger Syndrome, and One Man's Quest to Be a Better Husband It is written by David Finch. If that book does not work for you, try others, and find other people with AS that are your own age.. Some really great people out there. Good Luck and keep working at this and you will be ok.. and a gift to the world in your own unique way.

See if there is an Asperger's support group in your area. That would be a great place to make friends. Or see if any psych groups run a social skills program for adults. It will connect you to people with similar issues while helping you learn social skills needed to make and keep friendships.
