Is this normal?? - Asthma Message Board

When I started swim team season last year for about the first two weeks durring and after practice I wheezed horribly, my chest was tight, and I felt like I was going to pass out. I was talking to my friend today and she said the same thing happened to her. During lacross tryouts they had to run a mile without stopping. She mentioned that she was wheezing horribly and could not breathe. Neither of us have been diagnosed with Asthma but is this serious and we get it check out??

I think that warrants a Dr visit, granted you may be out of shape but the wheezing isn't part of that. To be safe I'd get checked out.

I'm skeptical on the wheezing part. It could very well be a laryngeal wheeze, but I would DEFINITELY ask for an exercise challenge test. This is where they have you run on the treadmill and take lung functions reading and measure your blood oxygen level to make sure. Your doctor also can listen to your heart and lungs while you're doing it.

I was a swimmer also, and during practices, I'd found that people without asthma, but who have recently had an upper respiratory infection, will wheeze in response to the high levels of chlorine in the pool area.

That spring I had what I thought was a cold that lasted for about 2-3 months (I don't think colds last that long) But I will see if we can get it checked out hoepfully it isn't serious!
