The 100, 250 and 500 refer to the levels of inhaled steroid in Advair. The level of long-acting albuterol remains the same. The inhaled steroid helps reduce inflammation and the higher doses are given for more severe symptoms. Advair came along 4-5 years ago. I think it is the greatest thing since inhalers themselves were invented. Much fewer side effects than taking anything orally (in fact, very few people experience side effects from advair). If you are THRILLED with the results, than it is well worth it.
