Advair

Is the "strength" of Advair like an antibiotic in that it should go by your age/weight?? Or is it more by your symptoms?? Just curious as you know my 6 year old 42 pound daughter was upped to 250/50 and I thought this sounded like alot.....more than doubled the amount of fluticasone proopionate she was taking in her 100/50 dosage..... I am THRILLED with the results I have seen but am curious about the dosage(and a little concerned)

Re: Advair

The Advair dosage isn't given out by size, but more asthma severity. Advair 250/50 is sometimes a great controller medication. Actually, the inhaled steroid is fairly benign and if it keeps her symptoms in check, then it is WELL worth it.

Re: Advair

I'm 48 yo and the 100/50 dose has done wonders for me-the best thing I've ever tried and after being diagnosed when I was 3 yo I've tried everything. The only thing I'm taking now is an OTC decongestant. If I stop either, i.e. forget to get my prescription filled or don't make it to the drugstore, then I'll immediately start having a bit of problem. I was using my rescue inhalator before Advair 2-3 times a day and now it may be 2-3 times a month. There is always new research on meds so if it's working well for you daughter, I wouldn't be overly concerned with the dosage. If they keep improving the meds over the next 5-10 years then she'll be on a different and better med in a couple of years anyway. As a life-long asthmatic, I can honestly say that none of the meds that I've used have caused any deterioration in my overall health or any long-lasting side effects. I never outgrew my asthma as some young people do but with the new meds at least I have a pretty normal life. Good luck to you and the little ones. Lots of hugs to you both. cg

The 100, 250 and 500 refer to the levels of inhaled steroid in Advair. The level of long-acting albuterol remains the same. The inhaled steroid helps reduce inflammation and the higher doses are given for more severe symptoms. Advair came along 4-5 years ago. I think it is the greatest thing since inhalers themselves were invented. Much fewer side effects than taking anything orally (in fact, very few people experience side effects from advair). If you are THRILLED with the results, than it is well worth it.
