Question Pulmicort respules and Albuteral, do they mix?

My 6 month old son has been on Albuteral since 3 months old. He developed asthma when he contracted RSV. He was hospitalized for the RSV. Once the virus went away,so did his asthma. However, in a week he was sick again. He gets colds frequently now. The albuteral and pulmicort respules really have an affect on his mood and personality. He is not happy on this medicine, and very wired. The doctor told me to put both solutions in the same treatment to avoid the baby having to be bothered with so many treatments. The pharmacist said not to mix them. I took the advice of the pharmacist, however, it is frustrating trying to give the respules without a fight, as well as getting the mist all over his face, and in his eyes. I worry about the steroid effect on his growth, as well as the long term medication effect on his life. Should I ask for a referral to a pulmnologist to be sure this is the best safest plan for the baby? My allergist says pulmnologists don't have as much experience with asthma, and it would be a waste of time and money for me to go to one. Please fill me in if you have any advice. Sorry So Long!!Thanks

Krsyd:

I take albuterol & pulmicort. Plrase reDad on. Al though a steroid, Pulmicort does not travel through the bloodstream when inhaled.

First of all,if you don't feel comfortable with the medication your child is taking & his rections, by all means see a pulmonologist. Contrary to what your doctor says, they have more experience with lung disordera than pediatricians & family practitioners. I speak from experience.
At the age of 48 I was diagnosed with emphysemia. My family do9ctor was treating me. I was so over medicated i ended up in the hospital. My husband made an appointment with a pulmonologist at a research hospital. I has decreased my medication substantially. I use Combivent during the day as a fast acting inhaler & Pulmicort & serevent in the A.M. & P.M.
I feel much better & am active.

You need to see a pediatric Pulmonologist for you peace of mind & your child's welfare. They are specialist's & are much bettwer equipped to deal with your chil;d's problem.

Let me know how you make out.

BL Thank you so much for your reply. It was comforting, and helpful. I was told by the doctor that the pulmicort was absorbed and could only be used for short periods or else it would affect the babies growth. I don't quite think either of my doctors know what they are doing, much less care. I happen to be a LVN for 13 years now, pediatrics, and I have watched the health care feild go down. It is all about money not patient care. I just have to pray for wisdom before I trust in these doctors. Thank you again!

Re: Pulmicort respules and Albuteral, do they mix?

How is your son doing now? I have a 7 month old and the exact same thing is happening. He got RSV from the daycare when he was 4 months old. His personality changed as well on the medications. He has been on the drugs albuterol and pulmicort since he was 4.5 months old. He is sick every week with something new. I have pulled him off all the drugs (with pediatrician's knowledge) because he is too hard to handle for the daycare and at home. he cry's non stop unless I am holding him if he is on the drugs. We have argued with our pediatrician... we are getting a second opinion. We haven't seen a specialist yet. He is on his 5th ear infection and they are talking about putting in tubes. Could all of this be allergy related? What did you do to treat the asthma if he is off the drugs? Since he has been off the drugs his personality is so much better and he seems mellow and happy again... but he has horrible coughing spells in the middle of the night and I have to do one treatment of albuterol to get it under control. He seems so wired out at night too. If you have any advice I would appreciate it.

Re: Pulmicort respules and Albuteral, do they mix?

Hey guys my daughter had the rsv and viral infections. It is not asthma-at least they can't diagnose it that quick. It is reactive airway disease. The viral infections cause the bronchioles to go into spasms.

Also if you son/daughter is having problems-you might want to check into seeing if they have an air freshener. My daughter was exposed to this at her daycare and ended up with what we thought was severe asthma. She also aquired sleep apnea, sinus problems, multiple ear infections, eye infection, mood changes. This can be a chemical sensativity. My daughter ended up with severe problems from this.

If you want more info on what we went throgh read the scared post by me. It has taken me over a year to figure it out.

Hugs
and best of luck
shelly
