Can't take deep breaths - Asthma Message Board

My 15 year old daughter told me last night that she has begun to notice on occasion, she can't take deep breaths. She said it happened about a week ago, when she was at the mall. She was upset at the time and had been doing a lot of walking. Then, it happened again last night after she had been running with some friends (not running for excercise, just playing around). Does this sound like the beginnings of excercise induced asthma? I was diagnosed with it at the age of 23, right after my son was born. She is not in the best of shape. She is about 5' 8", and weighs at least 150 lbs. She has just started to watch what she eats and has become more conscientence of her weight. Any advice?

What you describe could be a number of things, including asthma so I think you're best to get this checked out by a doctor. Being short of breath like that at her age is not 'normal' so I would take the problem seriously. My daughter has exercise induced asthma and it sounds a great deal like what you are describing. A proper diagnosis will make you both feel a lot better. Good luck.

Thank you for the advice. I plan to call the doctor on Monday and get an appointment. It happened again last night while she was at a game room with friends and I had to take her my inhaler. It's not that she's gasping for breath, because believe me she would have been in the ER! It just seems right now to be bothersome enough to her to have complained. Hopefully it is just mild asthma, or a type of bronchitis.

UPDATE! My daughter saw a doctor today. She has mild anemia! I never even thought of that.
