Post Re: Flovent and sore throat

Has anyone had to stop taking Flovent because of a severe sore throat or did the sore throat go away or become milder? I rinse my mouth with lots of water every time I use Flovent and all of a sudden I have throat irritation ( I do not have a cold ). Anyone have to stop taking Flovent because of sore throat or thrush?

Hi there .. welcome to the thrush family What you are experiencing is a very common side effect of steroids. I take a very high dose of inhaled steroids plus daily prednisone so I've been down this road lots of times. I find rinsing very well (a good 30 seconds) with warm water and then brushing my teeth (a good 2 minutes) helps tremendously. Also, when I get thrush, I use Nilstat oral swish (you get that from your dr) and I take 3 capsules a day of acidophilus. The trick with the acidophilus is to break the capsule open, pour the contents on your tongue and then let is sort of dissolve there before you swallow. This is just as disgusting as it sounds. However, it was suggested to me by an asthma specialist years ago and it works for me like a charm.

Hi Barb - Would just the acidophilus alone get rid of thrush? Also, where would one find these?

Ugh. I know exactly where you're coming from. I got this incredibly weird sore throat -- less of a sore throat and more of a hoarseness. It was SO IRRITATING.

I switched from Flovent to Pulmicort -- voila, no more sore throat.

Pulmicort does not absorb as fast as Flovent does -- about 1/5th as fast, in fact -- and so therefore does not tend to settle on your vocal chords as much and cause changes there.

You should notice the hoarseness going away within a week or so, and it should be fully gone within a month.

cb - acidophilus can be picked up at any health food store - and some drug stores. Its very common. I don't know if it would work alone on trush. I take it on a regular basis and maybhe that's why I don't seem to have much of a problem with thrush. Also, if you want to go the 'natural' route on thrush, I have heard that gargling with grapefruit seed extract is supposed to do it. I tried this and it didn't really work for me. I still needed the Nilstat.

My son has asthma and uses the flovent, He uses the enspire ease system (a spacer) and rinses after each use, does not have sore throat.

I, as Wrin, don't get any sore throat from the Pulmicort. But, on occasion I do get a bit of thrush at the back of my throat. I have Nilstat on hand, do the brushing (tongue too -- rinsing well) after I take my meds.

Thank you charleyhorse for the suggestion to break open the capsule and have it dissolve on the tongue.

I also find that when I have a "high" sugar diet for a few days, the thrush starts up. Not much, and it'll be gone in a day or two with the Nilstat. If I don't want to use the Nilstat (upsets my gut somewhat), sometimes I just wipe it away with a q-tip after brushing morning and night, and it doesn't come back.

Charleyhorse....would you suggest to use an aciophillus on the tongue everyday, or just when the thrush comes? I've never had it a lot since I check everyday. Would taking the caps everyday help in the longrun?

Thanks,
quincy

I've been using Flovent for YEARS without a spacer and have never had any kind of problems. Only thing I do is immediately brush my teeth and rinse out my mouth.

Somehow I think that some people are just more prone to thrush than others

The high-sugar diet kind of makes sense to me, especially if the sugar tends to want to sit around in your mouth, considering yeasts tend to thrive in high-sugar environments -- sort of why if you don't get the sugar/yeast/salt balance just-right when baking a loaf of bread.
