Hey Guys, I have a question to ask about asthma, I have just been diagnosed with mild/moderate asthma, but i have a high peak flow (about 410)I was wondering if anyone else that has asthma also have this. Also i was wondering if anyone gets hoarse with Ventolin inhalers, and if they do, deos it go away, thanks.

I was diagnosed with asthma by a methacholine challenge test. I've never had an "asthma attack" and my peak flows are always 410-470, within normal range for my age and size.

I've never used Ventolin. I was on Pulmicort and Foradil (both inhaled powders) and got a bit hoarse at first. Then it went away. After 4 months of those, my doctor changed me to Advair. I've been on it about 3 weeks and still sound hoarse from it. I've gotten my husband to tell me I sound sexy. But unfortunately everyone else I talk to says, "What's wrong with your voice?"

When your peak flows start significantly dropping, there's a reasonable amount of airway obstruction present.

They're more an indication of how much danger you're in currently, and less so an indication of the severity of the disease.

They can be used for both, but just because you have a high peak flow doesn't mean you don't have asthma.

I always had a high peak flow no matter how I felt and of course I immediately questioned the asthma diagnosis based on this. Trust me, peak flow has nothing to do with whether you have asthma or not. I proved it to myself and stopped using the Advair. And guess what I found? I have asthma.
