Red face Advair Side Effects

I had an Asthma attack, that was called: Status Asthmaticus, and I was in ICU in the hospital, and my doctor started me on Advair 100/50 about 4 days ago, as well as Combivent, (for Emergency situations). Everything was going fine until today, when I noticed tiny white bumps on the inner part of my lips, the tip of my tongue is sore, and my throat feels sore, as well as a "coated" feeling in my mouth. It burns my tongue, when I eat anything, but the tiny white bumps do not hurt. I also have clusters of the tiny white bumps on my gums, my tongue, and the inside of my cheeks, that actually form a line, on both sides of my mouth. I've never experienced this before, and I don't know what to do. I read some of the side effects that were listed on this message board, and I'm wondering if I have Thrush?! I can't get in to see the doctor for a day or two, so how can I make this go away? Maybe with an over-the-counter item, like mouthwash or Ambesol? Will this spread to other parts of my body, or the outside of my lips? Will it make my throat close up, or my tongue swell, and choke me to death? (Maybe an overreaction, there, but I'm worried) Is it contagious to others, and can it spread through kissing? This board has been helpful so far, and I hope someone can help me, now. Thanks,

Thrush is a common side effect of advair usage. To prevent it next time gargle with baking soda and lukewarm water after you take the advair, and before you brush your teeth. I had to quit taking advair so I've not dealt with the thrush part of it, so maybe someone else can tell you about that.

By the way, I find it odd that you had status asthmaticus and were put in the ICU, but they've just barely started you on advair 100/50 and combivent. I can understand the whole not knowing you had asthma, but if you have breathing troubles at ANY time, follow your asthma action plan and head in. Because you do have asthma and have been placed in the ICU then your body is capable of not responding to certain meds and making you go status again. It is imperative to follow your plan in these situations. If you don't have an asthma action plan, please ask for one, and possibly a peak flow meter. I don't mean to sound harsh, and I'm hoping your not taking it that way, but status and ICU are not things that are good to have had. I have been status and ICU, but I have severe asthma. Because you are on only Advair 100/50, I am assuming that you are not severe? (If I'm wrong please correct me) I'm glad you're talking to your doc. PLEASE don't take this as if I'm yelling at you or trying to expose you. I was on another board and I said something and I got into the questioning from hell. I jsut wanted to make sure you have an asthma action plan and all that good stuff.

By the way, I hope you're doing okay now!

It could be thrush. Only a doctor can say for sure.

Mouthwashes will not make it go away. The best way to keep yourself from getting it is to rinse your mouth after you take it.

It might spread to your nasal passages, or further down your throat, but that's not likely. It won't spread to other parts of your body in the sense that it will infect your skin on your hands or something.

Treatment often involves one pill. It will not make your throat close up. It will not make your tongue swell.

It is not contagious, and here's why.

The yeasts that are causing you an infection right now are there normally, just your body's immune system keeps them in check. The steroid helps them grow, and when the steroid sits in your mouth, they hve no problem multiplying out of the control of your body's immune system. Still, I would refrain from a whole lot of oral contact until you get them taken care of.

Wink

My doctor's office warned me to gargle and rinse w/ water after my Advair. Not to use Listerene or any mouthwash, especially the medicated kind to prevent "thrush". Man, who would think all of this stuff and side-effects are worth the cure? I get "cotton-mouth" so bad after my diskus- yuck! Anyway,if it helps... so be it! Good Luck to everyone!

Nice to have found this board, I don't feel so alone going thru all these "changes"...thanks!
