Stress and Asthma - Asthma Message Board

During the past two months I've been under a lot of stress, and I find myself waking up in the middle of the night coughing. I also cough a lot while exercising. Before my asthma was diagnosed, coughing was the most persistent symptom I had, but Advair (250/50) used to keep it in control very well. Now that's not the case any more.
Can being under a lot of stress do that? Has it happened to any of you? I'd been just waiting this problem to pass, as I've had my share of trying different inhalers and Advair was the only one that seemed to really work.

i'm sure alotta stress can bother your asthma, to the point where it can dig up buried symptoms and even start new symptoms..

when i'm under alotta stress i have a bad time with mucus and shortness of breath and unproductive coughing..

as of now i haven't been able to find anything that stops it..
when i'm really stressed, it's either one way or the other.. i get the symptoms or i don't..

good luck.. maybe using something fast-acting like albuterol would help..

Thank you for your response. I've been taking salbutamol for the persistent cough from time to time. Thank goodness it stops the cough... at least temporarily!

I've had the same symptoms than you described, mucus, shortness of breath, coughing.

May I ask you are you on an inhaler like Advair, Symbicort or similar?

yes, i take an Albuterol inhaler.. i'm supposed to take 2 puffs when needed..

other than that, i take 10mg Singulair daily.. i've gotten the most benefit from this drug.. it stopped my constant shortness of breath, in combination with Albuterol, it stops the mucus for quite a good amount of time..

however my symptoms aren't completely gone, so i can't call my asthma 100% under control.. i suspect i have something else however, so i'm going the the doctor to get checked for chronic sinusitis, and see if that isn't adding to my mucus problem..

I was just diagnosed the end of April and I am in a high stressed job and am going through alot of stres now, I am awake all night coughing with no relief. I am on Advair 500 and also Singular. Does your throat get dry so fast you can't tslk? This is all very scary. Do you have any suggestions---anyone.
