Singulaire caused wheezing?

My son is 4. He had RSV as a baby and was on the neb. He then had 3 or 4 more episodes of this through his toddler years where he was on the neb. He also had colds where he didn't wheeze. The last episode was this March, which was then proceeded by a six week bout of occasionally breaking out in hives, then seasonal allergy symptoms (itchy eyes, throat, nose, very cranky, etc). He also exhibited signs of stamina problems during exercise (red face, taking himself out of his soccor game or stopping playing, etc). He has an occasional very mild cough, which I think is postnasal drip related (he was dx with this and allergic rhinitis). He was put on Claritin by the pedi but this didn't seem to significantly help, but it did help some. I took him to a pediatric allergist. SHe examined him, said his chest was clear. This was two weeks ago. I also had him at the pedi that week and she examined him and said his chest was clear. The allergist suggested that we start him on Singulaire to control the possible/probable exercise induced asthma before we allergy test him. Anyway, after being on Singulaire, I took him back yesterday and his chest was coarse, she said. So then she ups the asthma meds to Flovent, which made him horribly aggressive and miserable. I only gave it to him once and then got in with another allergist today. He also heard wheezing.

Am I crazy to think the Singulaire caused him to wheeze. Why wouldn't they hear this two weeks ago when he actually seemed to be having more allergy symptoms then? I feel like he had no asthma til they gave him asthma meds.

His breathing test was good PFE (?) I think .. was 184 and he said they usuall like it around 200, but it was within normal limits. He said that that is often seen with milder asthma.

I think I might be in denial, but I just feel like the Singulaire could have caused this. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance for any help !!

Re: Singulaire caused wheezing?

I'm an older woman with adult onset asthma. I was put on Singulaire and got violently ill with horrendous coughing that turned into bronchitis which is still with me three weeks later. I know that it is the Singulaire becuase in the past it aslo caused coughing and wheezing and I was smart enough to discontinue it. The drs have a way of pooh poohing these complaints but if you read the contraindications for this drug -- it's right there. PLEASE spread the word!

I did talk her into weening herself off singulaire and she improved. She is still using the flovent and albuterol and was using albuterol before her sports and exercise activities and found she didn't need to always take the albuterol before those either, that it might be just as well to carry it with her in case she did.
