Unhappy New Asthma-Need Advice

Hello. Where to start. I've had bronchitis once or twice a year since I was a kid. Take an antibiotic and it's gone, no big deal. I am now 35. Well, this spring, early May I got bronchitis, took a zpack and it didn't go away. Well, the horrible sickness and cough did, but I am left now with asthma. STILL! Never had this before. I've been on inhaler since, only needed it twice a day. Took prednisone and two different antibiotics (total of 3) and still have asthma. Tried advair and now singulair. Nothing works. Singular made me feel horrible and worse. I now am only using the inhaler and it's up to about 4 times a day, including waking up at 3-4 a.m. to use it. Please don't judge me. I am a smoker. I know I have to quit. My doctor smokes too so that's why he doesn't freak out. He did say that it's definitely not helping me, but it's not causing it. He wonders if theres any mold in my house, or something new that started this. I've thought of everything, no new products or foods or vitamins or anything, can't imagine what it could be. I was even away for a week and still had it the same. The doctor is done with me and doesn't know what else to do and is sending me to pulmonary specialist. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions or been through this and found relief. Do I just have adult onset asthma? Any ideas? Sorry this got so long. I am very frustrated as I am tired of this already and haven't had a full night sleep in so long. Thanks for listening.
P.S. If I quit smoking, think it will go away as mysteriously as it appeared?
Thanks...

Re: New Asthma-Need Advice

Hello!
Don't worry,,,I'm not going to judge ya
I am 39 and have adult onset Asthma. I came down with pnemonia in Feb,,,would not clear up for months,,,went to pulmo,,,found out I have Asthma,,,I was in shock! But looking back I can tell I've had symptoms for years. Then,,,a bigger shock,,,I am allergic to about everything! I had no clue I had allergies!! My doc said he wanted me to go to an allergist for the pick test,,,I said I thought he was nuts but I'd go! Well,,,I was the one who was nuts I guess. From what I can tell,,,they say all my allergies kept triggering my asthma,,,that's why I could not get control of it. I'm on Advair,,,Singulair,,,Zyrtec,,,xopentix and a ventolin inhaler. I also started allergy shots. I still have bad days where I need to take a neb treatment,,,but I think I'm slowly getting better. As far as the smoking,,,I'm not a smoker so I can't help ya out there.
Hope this helped!
~~Lorrie

Re: New Asthma-Need Advice

I believe smoking is what is causing it. The smoke that you're inhaling is paralyzing the cilia inside your airways and causing them to not function properly. This will lead to an increased rate of infections that don't clear as well. It would be in your best interest to join a smoking cessation support group and QUIT. This will, maybe not cure, but definitely make things better for you. I'm sorry if it seems like I'm judging you, or sounding too serious, but it is serious, and I urge you to quit, or at least try.

Take care.

Welcome to the world of adult onset Asthma. I got it after getting the flu. All of a sudden, I was allergic to almost everything. It started about 35 years ago. I continued to smoke for years until the smoke caused me so much pain, each time I inhaled, I was forced to quit. I still have asthma but it is more or less under control.

First thing I would try is sleeping in a surgeons mask. Try to get one that doesn't smell too bad. The bed is the worst place for allergies, and mold spores are active at night, so a mask will protect you somewhat.

Do you have wall to wall carpetting? Do you have uphosltered furniture? Do you keep your windows open? Do you use fabric softeners or detergent to wash or dry your clothes? Do you use artificial sweeteners? Is your place dust free? Do you handle chemicals? Do you eat gravies or sauces or pre-packaged, frozen meals? Do you eat lunch meats, sausage or other packaged meats? You could even be allergic to certain clothing dyes. Ever wheeze after putting on a particular shirt?

Anything that you breath, that touches your skin or that you eat or drink could be contributing to your asthma. You need to eliminate as much as you can from your environment until you find out what is contributing to your asthma.

I would be smoking today if it didn't get so painful. Each puff burned the hell out of my lungs. I had to stop. It's not just the smoke that is bad. There are many chemicals in cigarette smoke. You could be allergic to several of the chemicals.

Your doctor is a real jerk. To those with allergies, just the smoke on someone's clothing, or hair, can set off an allergic attack. Your doctor should be ashamed of himself.

With allergies, it is quite common to suddenly become allergic to things that never bothered you before.

Also....... allergies are combinational. Let's say that you are now allergic to 30 things. Let's say that you are allergic to milk, cats, dust, news-ink, mold, tree pollen, grass pollen, various weeds, corn, beef, vegetable gums, chocolate, various inks, etc.

Let's say that you drink a lot of milk. You are allergic to milk but it usually doesn't bother you. Then one day you come into contact with some dust. You are also allergic to dust, but this time it doesn't bother you. The next day you eat some chocolate. Once again, this doesn't bother you. The next day, the pollen level is high and you drink a glass of milk again and put on a shirt that has a dye for which you are allergic. The combination of all of those allergens, over the past few days, now accumlates into an asthmatic reaction.

Sounds complex, doesn't it? It is!

I was even away for a week and still had it the same.
When you go away, you pick up additional allergens. That is why a lot of allergy sufferers get worse when they come BACK from vacation. The combination of the allergens picked up on vacation, and the allergens at home, usually causes a pretty nasty allergic reaction.

Suggest to your doctor that he become a bagboy at a grocery store. He won't be able to harm anyone there.

Quitting smoking is a necessity. It would probably reduce your asthmatic condition, depending upon how allergic you are to the chemicals in the smoke. Quiting could make you worse, for a while, since your asthmatic body would have to go through withdrawal from the chemicals, which can take months.

Regards, and best of luck getting your asthma under control.

Re: New Asthma-Need Advice

Thank you very much to everyone that has responded. You have given me really really great advice and I know the most important thing is I have to quit smoking. For now, I started the Advair again and I am FINE all day and only use the inhaler once in the morning and once at night. It's helping for now. I am also going for some allergy testing to see if/what I am allergic too, not only for asthma, but for general health too, things that might not agree with my body.
Thanks again....
