Lightbulb "Air Hunger" "Deep Breaths" You might have CHS.

Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome

Do you have the follow symptoms (not all inclusive):

"air hunger"
"feel like breathing through a straw or get enough air"
"chest tight or hurts"
"back muscles hurt or tight"
"rapid breathing"
"dizzy"
"panicky"
"deep breath attempts just stop"
"sigh alot or yawn alot to get satisfying breath"
"when you do get a deep breath satisfaction only last a few minutes"
"lump in the throat"
"chest muscles and back muscles feel tired"

If you have seen lots of doctors and they do not know what is wrong with you because all the tests say your normal or they say you suffering from stress and give you medication or tell you to see a psychiatrist. Ask them about CHS. Many doctors do not know about CHS because as you can see the above symptoms can also be a result of more serious conditions and it is difficult to diagnose CHS. There is even some argument CHS actually exists, but it is very real for those of us that suffer from it. You are not crazy. Google Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome and you will see it is a real condition with some real treatment options. I have not pursued any of the treatment options b/c I think I can lick this myself since I know what I have now. Knowledge is half the battle. I searched for 2 years for an answer and finally a way out. Good luck. Hopefully this helps.

Re: "Air Hunger" "Deep Breaths" You might have CHS.

i think this might be what i have..

i'm a 19 yr old male standing at 5'11

my avg peak flow shud be 600

right now, 600 is the lowest i can go, i hit anywhere from 600-800

my doctor thinks it cannot be asthma that's causing me not able to take a full breahte. what i realize is that, wen i'm out with friends and having fun, i breathe ok. but it's when i notice my breathing i get stuck.

if i do have this syndrome, what are some things i can do to help?

Re: "Air Hunger" "Deep Breaths" You might have CHS.

If you have not already done it I would google CHS and read about it. I have read you can get help from therapist who can help with breathing training. In my case my problem started after going through some prolonged stress when I started a new job. When someone is under stress they can change the way they breath without knowing it and next thing you know your body gets used to it and doesn't remember how it is suppose to do it. It is usually worse for me when I notice my breathing so I try not to think about. However, I have been much knowing it is nothing serious and I am not crazy. I would read more about it and discuss it with your doctor.

Re: "Air Hunger" "Deep Breaths" You might have CHS.

i've googled it and from what i've read, i'm pretty positive this is what i have. i been thorugh a lot of tests and all came out fine. my asthma is actually non existent according to my peak flow readings....and yes i don't notice it when i don't pay attention to it. i realize that the more attention i pay to breathing, the harder it is for me to breathe. it also started when all my friends left town for colleges and i was forced to adapt life all by myself until i made new friends. i live alone btw. i will discuss this issue with my doctor tomorrow or my next appt but i'm just wondering what kind of therapist are you seeing for your disorder? a name perhaps?

thanks for the input

i've always thot i had somethi like this buh never knew htere was a name for it

n yes i yawn a lot just to get enuf air altho it doens't work sometimes

Re: "Air Hunger" "Deep Breaths" You might have CHS.

I am not seeing any doctors or therapists for myself. I have not looked into it that much b/c I am trying to see if it just goes away with time. However, I would start with more internet searching if I decided to under go some professional treatment or my doctor. I am sure there are specialists who deal with breathing ailments especially doctors who deal with asthmatics. I would expect them to point me in the right direction. I really do not have much problem now since I found out there is a name to what we have. It is mostly psychological. It should go away with time I hope. Let me know what your doctor thinks. Hopefully, he/she will have some perspective avenues to explore or at least refer you to someone if you want professional help. You can also get books which detail breathing techniques. But you probably already know that. Good luck.

Re: "Air Hunger" "Deep Breaths" You might have CHS.

Hi I'm usually on the allergy board, but saw this post. I had all the symptoms in the first post, plus a blood/gas result that showed I was hyperventilating, even though I was not visibly panicky or hyperventilating. It turned out I had sino-bronchial syndrome. Sinus drainage was going into my chest causing asthma -like symptoms. But all my chest x-rays and pulmonary function tests were normal. I had no other sinus symptoms like headaches or anything. My primary care doctor, dismissed me as having anxiety. Even my CT scan of the sinuses looked normal, except for an enlarged turbinate. But the ENT agreed to open the sinuses when he removed the turbinate and cleaned out a bunch of gunk. It totally solved my problem. Something to consider anyway.
