Is it asthma or not?

It all started 1 1/2 years ago. I got a bacterial bronchitis and got antibiotics for it and the coughing didn't go away but the mucous stopped. I then was treated with prednisone for 3 weeks and foradil for a month, months later. Pulmonary doc said I got a asthmatic bronchitis and a lot of wheezing and a dry persistent strong cough was present. Then the coughing went but I was left with a stuffing in my throat for months. He tried singulair on me for a week, didn't work and gave me antibiotics again with Advair and it didn't go away. And after all of that I went to see another pulmonary doc and he did a X-Ray and breathing test on me and they were perfect and he said my lungs were clean. But sounds like a mild mild asthma. I was feeling very good at that time, about a year ago. Till then I just experiences that stuffing here in there and that's it. Over a month ago, I suddenly got a rapid shallow breathing, it was a bit more then mild and lasted for hours! I tried albuterol 3 times, and didn't help. First time ever used it. I went to the pulmonary doc a few weeks later, he checked me out and did a breathing test and said everything is great. He said it is very unusal to be asthma because I had no mucous, wheezing or anything during the attack I thought it was. And all asthma meds I tried before never helped. He doesn't know what it is. Since what happened I have to take deep breaths, not all the time, whenever I feel a slight breathing difficulty. I'm taking no meds for anything and I would like to know what you guys think.

Re: Is it asthma or not?

Just read about that...and it said that this a life-threatening condition and has really bad symptoms and is very rare. So I guess I would be dead or very sick by now.

By the way I'm only 18. Does age matter?

Re: Is it asthma or not?

Hi
There is another cause of breathing problems that can give asthma like symptoms and that is acid reflux. Ive had bad breathing problems for a year, and am on loads of asthma med that works ok but not brilliantly. My lung tests and peak flow readings are always excellent. But I do have acid refluxing from my stomach and this can irritate the lungs. Most people get a lot of heartburn with acid reflux, but there are also lots of people who's only symptom is asthma/like symptoms.
Is your breathing worse after eating or at night? Do you get any heartburn/burping/bloating etc? Theres loads of stuff on the web about it so check it out!
If that is it you can get medication to help.
Hope that helps.
