Interesting thing I learned about asthma - Asthma Message Board

Hi all,

Just wanted to tell you all about my experience in case it helps someone else here. Okay, so about a month and a half ago I started having symptoms of what looked like a bad cold. It slowly progressed until I was coughing to the point of gagging. I started having a lot of trouble breathing and was feeling light-headed. I explained to the doctor that I had childhood asthma when I was in early grade-school from lung damage caused by a severe case of pnuemonia. She told me that it could be that I have asthma now. I was quite surprised at this as it seemed it had all gone away, but is now showing it's ugly head again. Anyway, I wasn't aware that childhood asthma continued into adulthood, but now I learned that it indeed does. Now I just have to see what I need to do in my future to prevent more events like this!

Yup childhood asthma can continue into adulthood. My grandad was severely asthmatic as a child and it reared its ugly head when he was in his 50's. I think asthma always hangs around and flares up at the oddest of times.

I had it when I was 6 and it retuned in my teenage years. My mom got it in her 30's after not having it since childhood.

Childhood asthma definitely can continue into asthma. I'm mildly asthmatic. My son is VERY severe in his asthma symptoms. Like you, I didn't even realize I had asthma. I just thought I had a "cough." Then I learned that the majority of adult asthma sufferers don't even know that they have asthma. They don't get the gasping and wheezing symptoms. They just get an occasional and often persistant cought... and they dismiss this as an illness... not asthma.

Since my son was diagnosed, we got very proactive about getting the asthma triggers out of our indoor environment. The side effect of treating his asthma like this was that my cough also went away.

Yes, I have learned it comes back too...I had severe asthma as a infant and got somewhat better as a child, went from severe to mild.

now that I'm 35 years old it has gotten severe again. I can't breathe if I don't have my herbal medications.
