advair dependency - Asthma Message Board

Hi everyone

I have been taking advair for around 4 years or so. I take one puff at night and think my body needs this to not have asthma. If I miss a day I have attacks all day. I don't remember it being this bad before I started the drug. I must say I has helped dramaticly but I am afraid that I may never be off or know if I can get better.I suppose I feel one day it will go away and this may be ridiculous.My gg grandmother g grandmother and mother all died of asthma and I don't want me to be weaker because of drug. Any advice?

Well, there is no cure for asthma. Once you have it as an adult you will always have. So am not sure that you become "dependent" on the steroid inhalers any more than a diabetic becomes "dependent" on insulin. It helps to control the asthma as it can get worse during the aging process.

It can get worse in the aging process?

Once you get asthma, it never goes away. Once it is controlled though, you will have less attacks or milder attacks.

I find that if I miss my dose of Advair I will cough all day, not realizing why until I get home and take my bedtime dose and see that I missed my morning dose. Always carry your rescue inhaler with you (albuterol). If you do not have one, request one immediately from your doctor.

As people age, they tend to do less cardio and have more illness. This can increase the severity of your asthma. It's important to stay active and healthy.
