Medications for a 2 1/2 year old - Asthma Message Board

Everytime my son get a bad cold it turns into a bad astham attack.
He is on singulair and flovent 2 puffs a day (increased to 2puffs twice daily when he starts a cold) and ventolin when he is wheezy.

We just had another episode this week-end where he needed to go to the ER to get a ventilin mask and again is on pedipred (predisone) .

My question is do other parents find any other inhaler that works better for their child than what my son is on!!! I'm in Canada so I don't know if the meidicines are called the same here.

My dd is the same way. Colds always bring on an attack. She is on Advair. We do not use it regularly though as she normally does not need it. The moment someone in the house gets a cold we start her on Advair.

It doesn't always completely work but we rarely have to give her a nebulizer or inhaler anymore. This last time was really bad and we did have to go on prednisone which worked like a charm!

We've been through Singular and all the others - advair is the only one that has really worked with all my kids.

I should edit this to say that 2 puffs of advair 2x a day is almost overload for a 9yo child so I know they won't give that much (at least shouldn't) to a younger child.

I am obviously from a different part of the world to you as I have never heard of those brands of asthma meds. My daughter is 3, and too has severe asthma. She has been hospitalised 5 times in the last 6 months. Therefore the meds she is on:

* a preventer (flixotide) 2 puffs twice daily,
* respitory stimulant (Ventolin) up to six puffs when needed (depending on severity) via spacer, and as often as every 15 minutes
* Predmix (prednisolone) for up to 5 days- which I have permission now to administer myself, without medical advice

I am wondering whether your child is seeing a paediatrition. If not that would be my advice to you. They DO know their stuff!!!

It would be great to hear how you guys are going from time to time

And I do feel for you. Asthma is a very scary condition, especially in kids
