Question for those with asthma that the cough is the big problem - Asthma Message Board

My never ending cough after a cold led me to finally go to a pulmonologist who ruled out other stuff , did a metha-choline challenge and put me on advair, lose dose twice a day. 4 days after starting it, after coughing for like 9 months I just stopped!!!!!!!!!!It was great!

Now I think I'm getting sick. Before being diagnosed every cold led to a cough that went all night long- apparently bronchospasms wouldn't stop. So I just got back froma business trip didn't get much rest because of a major hotel screw up and now I don't feel well and the cough is starting? What works for coughs for others. I'm still doing my inhaler 2x a day. I just tried taking Delsym which used to help. I'm hoping that does it. But wondering if you get a cough with asthma thats pretty well controlled do you guys need stronger cough medicinee- last few times I got a cough I had to take stuff with codeine.

Hi Dazed, sorry you're feeling lousy. I have cough variant asthma, so my main asthma symptom is endless coughing. Do you have a rescue inhaler like albuterol, maxair or something? If I get a cold or something, I usually start using mine every 4 hours to try to keep the coughing under control. I am not talking about the advair though, don't use that any more often. My asthma dr does not like me using cough supressant when my asthma is flared, but I do have some codeine cough syrup on hand that I take once in a blue moon, only before bed when the cough keeps me awake. If your rescue inhaler is not keeping the cough somewhat controlled, you may need to call your dr & try bumping the advair to a higher dose, or possibly adding some prednisone to help you get through.

No I don't have a rescue inhaler, this is the first time I've been sick since being diagnosed and I actually have my first followup thursday, so I guess I'll try to make it to then or call. Thanks for the reply.

Please give your dr a call, everyone with asthma should have a rescue inhaler. I can't imagine a dr prescribing advair without a rescue inhaler also. Good luck!

I second what Sue said. You MUST have a rescue inhaler. It should stop the cough immediately. Always does with mine.
