New to Asthma - please help! - Asthma Message Board

Hello! My 7-year old son was just diagnosed on Friday with seasonal mild asthma. He was prescribed the Flovent inhaler twice a day. However, I think we are having trouble with it. He puts it in his mouth and I depress the top. However, the "smoke" is coming up through the inhaler rather than getting in his mouth. Well, I have to assume some is getting in his mouth, but I'm not sure if this is what is supposed to happen or if we are losing a lot of the medication out the top. Any thoughts? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, advice or thoughts!!

Are you shaking it up beforehand? And he should hold it just out from his mouth, press and inhale. My doctor does not like that they have done away with the spacer the old formulation of Flovent required. He feels you get too much hitting your tongue if you put it in your mouth. And he may be inhaling just before the Flovent rather than just after it is activated. Let us know how this works for you.

Yes, shake it first, count to 3 and as you depress, your son needs to inhale and hold for a second.

I try to start to inhale before depressing and that stops the medicine from coming up the top. I haven't used it much so coordiination is part of getting it right. Maybe you can tell him to start inhaling ? If I don't breathe in enough I get a nasty taste on my tongue.

They have disc inhalers where you put your mouth over the hole in the disc inhaler and just inhale. Or you could try an aerochamber. That's what my son and daughter use.
