New to Asthma - Asthma Message Board

Hi,

My name is Jen and I'm mum to identical twin daughters who will be 3 in September. One of my DD's has just been diagnosed with Asthma.

Now in the 1 month since her diagnosis, we have had 2 hospitalisations and my husband and I are still trying to get our heads around it. We don't know alot about Asthma so expect lots of questions from me.

My first is this: Since her discharge from hospital 4 days ago, she seems to be holding her breath alot. Now she was hospitalised because she got a bad virus which brought on a bad asthma attack resulting in a 4 day hospital stay.

When she is asleep her breathing seems fine, I've just noticed a difference during the day. What she does is inhale then hold her breath for a second or 2, then exhale. Is this due to the Asthma? I've never noticed her doing it before and she is doing it quite a bit.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

sorry to hear about your childs diagnosis!

Im not sure about the holding breath thing, i would talk to my doctor.
I would guess maybe shes developed an irregular breathing pattern due to the asthma, which breathing exercises might help. If its a serious problem a breathing physiotherapist can retrain breathing. might be hard in a such a young person tho.

I know asthma can contribue to irregular breathing patterns, but they can be fixed. Not sure tho id talk to your doctor about it!

im new to this too, but when iw as little sometimes id stop brethaing for a few seconds, then exhale, i think it was becuase my breathing often felt shallow, it still does but i havent noticed if i still have that habbit or not, i dont know if she does it for the same reason i did, but to me it just felt like i should, like just a weird habbit.

Do you have any pets? Pets cause a lot of particulate in the air that many people especially children get the can't breath syndrome from. It's especially hard on children because they can't necessarily communicate what is bothering them.

Has your doctor talked about doing allergy skin testing?
