well as far as i know you can get asthma when your 20, or any age, it doesnt have to start as a child, it could have just been "lying sleeping"(if you get what i mean) in your body up until now, i had it when i was a child then it dissappeared for nearly 5 years and i have it again now.
as for the inhalers i think it is all to do with how bad it is and how low your peakflow is to how much of your inhaler you would need everyday, i use mine which is called seretide, 2 times twice a day plus i have a ventalin 1 which i use when i need it
of course smoking isnt going to help it and people with asthma are all different so there is no 1 thing that triggers it with everyone there are all sorts of things that make it worse, which unless you have allergy tests etc you wot know what those things are until you come into contact with them(things like certain foods, pet hair, exercise, dust, etc)
