newly diagnosed asthma - relieved to finally have an answer

This is my story - I will try to make this as short as possible. I am a 42 year old female. I have been complaining for the longest time to my primary care doctor that I get dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea (I have had it quite often since October), loss of energy, slight chest pain but mostly trouble breathing, feelings of wanting to pass out, etcÖ. He would always shrug it off that I had allergies & acid reflux and would prescribe, prevacid, Allegra, depression pills. None of these things helped especially with my sluggishness lately. I even had a slight suspicion over a year ago that I may have asthma. He also shrugged this off and said ďoh I just listened to your lungs you arenít wheezing you donít have itĒ I even suggested seeing an allergies and he said ďoh then you would have to take shots the rest of your life so I wasnít given a referral. The most he would do is refer me to get a chest x-ray and prescribe the above meds.

Just recently our insurance changed to that we donít need referrals which was great so I can see doctors of my choice and decided to see a Gastro and an allergist. Well today I saw the allergy doctor who gave me a bunch of things for the sinuses such as a 21 day course of antibiotics, Nasonex, Prevacid, Mucinex D, and some antihistamine spray. Also during this visit she did a pulmonary exam and found I did infact have asthma. I cant tell you how happy I am that I finally found out what part of my problem was as this has been getting worse & worse that I didnít feel I was taking a full breath much worst while standing. She put me on Advair for the moment. I see her again in a week so I will find out more info. AS of now I will cancel the Gastro doctor since I pretty much found out today why I was feeling the way I was.

This just shows that if you feel something is very wrong donít accept your doctors word that nothing is wrong or accept him shrugging it off as something else. If I didnít take matters into my own hands I probably would have went for years & years like this getting worse with no answers. I am scared but very relieved that I now know

Re: newly diagnosed asthma - relieved to finally have an answer

Hi Ginger and welcome to the boards. I am sorry you had such a difficult time getting a an answer at first but am glad to hear you are seeing a good allergist who will be able to help you, and get you on a regiment that will help control your asthma.

thanks very much!! Im sure I will find out tons of info.
I cant put into words how relieved and excited I am to finally have an answer. I think I have had this for a while but just slowly over the past year it has been coming to a head.
