Shortness of breath?

Hello, my name is Joshua Alday, I've been diagnosed with asthma since I was around 3 years old, only to mysteriously dissapear about around the age of 12-13. I rarely had any kind of flare-ups. At the age of 16, I never had any issues with breathing AT ALL. I could run... jump... do anything just about. I used to do parkour and skateboarding, never had an issue with asthma. The only times I would have have issues breathing, the majority of it would have been caused by my allergies (pollen, dust, mites), which have been solved with allergy medicines. As soon as I turned 18, I moved up to ohio (being in florida most of my life), where a week after being there, I started having asthma issues. I saw a physician and was prescribed albuteoral(sorry if misspelled), and Azmacort. Being on that, everything went back to normal, then I azmacort ran out, so did my insurance, I was no longer on my parents anyways. But after being off Azmacort, I only noticed mild symptoms when going to sleep, but barely at all. I finally was able to see a docter in getting something prescribed for my allergies that would also handle my mild and rare cases of asthma. I was prescribed singulair, which became my best friend, no more allergy issues, asthma didn't bother me at all what so ever (mainly because my asthma was triggered through allergies). I had to move back down to florida due to some fanancial problems and decided to go into the airforce (currently I just have to pass my singulair and then I'm in). But recently (within the last 3-4 days), I've been trying to get back on a regular workout schedual running and all. Keep in mind that I'm still on singulair. While running, I started to experience a strange issue that seemed a bit familair, but I couldn't bring about it. I started to have shortness of breath, but now wheezing of any sort (which is what the most common sign for me when asthma starts affecting me). The first workout days, bout 1 or 2 days, I didn't have any issues finishing everything out, but after that, I started to get irritated with it, and took my albuteoral that I kept on me in cases like this (I carry it in my pocket like I do my money, it's just a worked in pratice cause I still have "asthma"). After the 4th or 5th work out day, after taking the inhaler, the symptoms didn't exactly go away, I still had a lot of breath shortness and unsleepable nights (also to add in there, I was having slight chest pressure) even one like tonight.

I don't know why this would be happening, the last time this happened was when I was around 12 years old, where none of my medicine worked at all, but after sitting around in a hospital lobby, the symptoms degradded before I was seen. I also am taking in the consideration that I'm horribly out of shape, when I got back down to florida, I did an almost 3 week spree of cokacola drinking, no water or any other natural source of fluids. Those are the only things I can trully see being an issue, not even a year ago I was able to run 2 miles non-stop without breaking a sweat, and givin the fact that I have singulair and I also took my inhaler and still had shortness of breath... Right now it's currently managable, and I'm going to go try running tomorrow and hope things improve with physical fitness.

Another thing that I thought of is what if my lungs are getting stronger, it's like working out after not working out for about 2-3months, everything is sore and in pain, that's the only other thing I could think of... If anyone has any input, I'd be glad to hear it. I can't have any of these issues in the military, they'll surely not let me in with these conditions (that are very rare I must say). Even though I just want to do computer programming hah.

Re: Shortness of breath?

Does anyone have any clues? Please? It's keeping me from working out and all, haven't been able to for about a week now and it's really starting to bother me mentally. I'll go see a docter if I need to, but I need to know if it's something to actually worry about...

Re: Shortness of breath?

when you have asthma you have to medicate with albuterol BEFORE cardio - not if you have an attck during it. My regimen is 2 puffs, 1 minute apart, 15-20 minutes before jogging. If you don't have a doctor to call about how to try it, I would start with 1 puff 15 minutes before jogging and see how that does. If you still have trouble, up it to the 2 puffs. Do not take mmore than the 2 puffs! If that doesn't do the trick, then you really do need to see your pulmonologist.

Re: Shortness of breath?

O.o That's not even the case. My asthma is so rare that I don't even have one of those kind of doctors. The main point of this post was not to target that the fact that I can't exersize, but that I'm having this breathing issue (which is affecting my exercising). And as I stated once before, my albuterol doesn't help with the breathing even when I'm not exersizing. I just took it bout an hour ago, still having the same issues except that I am now calmer and a lil under control, but it'll be as bad as it was before tomorrow.

Re: Shortness of breath?

If you are having a flare of asthma and the Albuterol isn't fully helping, you should go to see a doc. Even a primary care type would help at this point.

What Titchou is referring to is Exercise Induced Asthma. Based on what you wrote, I wouldn't discount it out of hand. You should read up on it more to see if that fits your case.

While Singulair is OK, it in and of itself doesn't always control asthma by itself. I know it didn't in my case.

Asthma can onset at any point of life. There isn't always anything that you can really understand about why it is triggering as an adult.
