My 11 year old has been wheezing for a month - HELP!

Hello,
I am so glad that I found this site. My poor son has been wheezing for a month now. He wheezes when he breathes in and has a wheeze followed by a gurgle sound when he breaths out. We have been to the doctor every 3 days for a month, have been to the ER at CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia), had a chest x-ray done (clear) and have been on numerous meds. He has been on predisone for 3 weeks, two courses of antibiotics, prevacid because CHOP believes his wheezing is caused by stomach acid. It has also been thought that he has a RSV virus. He has been on Ventolin 90 mg inhaler through a spacer - 4 puffs every 4 hours for a week. Before that he was on the nebulizer 3 times a day. Even with the 4 puffs every 4 hours - That was only controlling him but he still had wheezing all of the time. We have now been using the Ventolin, but 2 puffs every 6 because he was so shaky before. He also takes two puffs of advair twice a day and singulair. All of this and my son still wheezes and coughs this horrible mucus cough. He has never ever had anything like this before in his life! The pediatrician and the allergist are both stumped and said they have done everything they could for him. The pediatrician said he should have been better by this time. We are awaiting to see a Phonologist on December 30th at CHOP. This is the earliest I could get (Feb. 11 was the first appointment, but I went to CHOP in person. My pediatrician is calling to see if we can get in earlier. The doctor's have said that he is moving air and his oxygen levels are 97/98. Have any of you ever heard of wheezing lasting this long? I am very worried about his wheezing for this long. Any in site is greatly appreciated. We are going to the doctor again on Friday the 27th of November, (pediatrician).

Has anyone done a X-Ray on his lungs? He could have pneumonia. Try getting him to lay head down on the couch with his legs up, in other words, his head will be towards the floor. Once in this position, pat him rather hard on the back, but not so hard as to hurt him, but you want to get all that mucous moving and if you pat him on the back, it can move the mucous and make him cough it up. I had to do this when my son was 4, he had asthma, pneumonia, and a collapsed lung. Good luck..

Sunny

Why would he be seeing a phonologist? I would think either a gastroenterologist or a pulmonologist would be next.

Also, we had an x-ray done and it was clear.

Re: My 11 year old has been wheezing for a month - HELP!

As long as he doesn't get any worse and he can play, etc, I wouldn't get too worried. I'm thinking it's acid reflux and that can take a while to get under control. It also may be asthma and the med combination you've been trying isn't what he needs....though the ventilin should have made a difference......the pulmonologist is a good place to start.
