Albuterol and Coughing

Hi all

My primary asthma symtom is an unrelenting dry cough. This sometimes goes on for months at a time. I'm now on a nebulizer 4 times a day and it seems to be helping.

My Pharmacist has told me that my rescue inhaler will not help my cough, bu in reading some of the threads here it seems that you folks use yours when your cough gets out of control.

Does the rescue inhaler help the cough or not?

Thanks in advance

Re: Albuterol and Coughing

A dry cough is typically my main asthma symptom. When things get worse, I get the shortness of breathe.

The main causes of dry coughs are asthma, acid reflux, allergies, post nasal drip.

I'm concerned though if you are having to use your nebulizer that frequently. Are you on a daily preventative asthma medication? Have you seen a Pulmonologist?

Re: Albuterol and Coughing

Hi and thanks for responding

I have exactly the same conditions that you have. I am an on a daily steroid twice a day. I also take a nasal steroid spray for post nasal drip along with Pseudophed and generic claritin for my allergies.

I've just been on a nebulyzer for a week and they want me to do it for two weeks. This time of year is really nasty for allergies with fall plants going nuts. I also generic Prilosec for my reflux, but I just started.

I do have a pulmonologist.

For future referrence, will the albuterol rescue inhaler help with my couph, temporarily?

Thanks again.

Re: Albuterol and Coughing

I think it varies from person to person. It normally helps mine but I don't get the cough that often. My first sign is usually slight tightness in my chest.

Re: Albuterol and Coughing

If I am coughing because my chest is tight, the rescue inhaler helps. If I'm coughing because my throat is irritated, then asthma medicines won't help.

And I agree with MountainReader, you should not be needing 4 nebs a day on a regular basis. You need to be on an inhaled steroid medicine to get the inflammation in your lungs down.
