Prednisone Dosage for a flare?

I was just curious as to how much Pred. people take in a flare. I had a nasty one last night and only had 30 mg left...but it saved me I believe! My pulmo is on vacation and I am trying to get my prescription filled. Last time he gave me 40mg for 7 days and then 20 for 7. For the last few months my asthma has NOT been controlled and I cannot be addicted to this stuff. When I am in the RED Zone Albuterol is NO help. Just wanted to see how others cope.

Re: Prednisone Dosage for a flare?

I normally start at 40 or 60 mgs. If I start at 60 I drop to 40 after 2 days and then decrease by 5 mg every other day until I hit zero. I recently got a new allergist because mine retired & she tried my on a shorter taper (60 for 2, 40 for 2, 20 for 2 and off) but I couldn't do it. When it was time for me to drop to 20 I was not well enough to do it & had to go back to the longer taper. I usually keep enough pred around for at least a few days in case I need it & the dr is not in.

Re: Prednisone Dosage for a flare?

Hi Sue430......Thanks for sharing. It really seems as if we are on our own to self treat during a flare. We really can't wait for a flare and then call the Dr. or worse yet, go to the ER where they fill you up with Pred. I, too now have my back up supply and will be prepared. This last time I did 30 then down by 5 a day...I am not sure that will do the trick but I have some 20's waiting for me at the pharmacy thanks to my Asthma advisor at the hospital. My Asthma is sinus related we think and I have surgery scheduled in about 2 weeks!

Re: Prednisone Dosage for a flare?

For a flare up my dr prescribes 100mg then down by a 5mg a day till I am down to 40mg and I stay on that as a maintenance dose.
