Difficulty breathing with even mild changes in weather or temperature.

I am a 65 y.o. male with a history of childhood asthma. I gave up smoking about 8 years ago and since I did that I have had a problem with shortness of breath. I have chronic sinusitis, have had surgery for it and have taken all available medications with no benefit. I have constant post nasal drip. I have shortness of breath when there is a change in humidity, barometric pressure, when it is windy and when there is a change in temperature, even only a slight change. Going from an air conditioned room to a warm room causes SOB. I used to live in New England and was advised to move to a warmer climate, so I moved to Malaysia. I still have the problem. Every doctor and ENT specialist gives me the same medications, over and over again, but nothing works. They can't tell me what is wron with me and eventually give up. It is driving me crazy because I am gaining weight because I can't exercise properly when I can't breathe. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Your breathing symptoms are suggestive of asthma, so I am wondering what all you have been treated with already that did or didn't help. Have you have a chest xray and pulmonary function tests? Do you have any heart problems, previous heart attacks, swelling etc? It would help to know what all you have been tested for and treated with. Environmental control of allergens is very important in asthma too. It is quite common for childhood asthma to return later in life. It is certainly good that you quit smoking! Many people have exercise induced asthma and can exercise if they use their inhaler prior to exercise. I think you will get help from people here. I am asthmatic and so are lots others who can give you suggestions.

What meds are you on? Have you done allergy injections? What about premedicating before cardio with your rescue inhaler?

I agree with the above posters and have the same questions. What meds are you on at this point?

Have you been checked for infection?

Have you had pulmonary testing as of late? x-rays, etc?

Do you have reflux?

I have had pulmonary function tests, x-rays and have tried every medication that is available. Nothing helped. Thanks.

Yes, I have GERD and am taking meds for that. I believe there is a strong connection between the GERD and my breathing problems. I also have IBS and have noticed when I am bloated breathing becomes more difficult.

GERD, reflux, etc can mimic asthma symptoms. It's a fine line getting the meds right and staying on any of the diets is difficult as well. If no asthma meds are working, and premedicating before cardio ( 2 puffs of albuterol, 60 seconds apart and 1520 minutes before cardio) does not help, then it's not the asthma.
