| How does my three year old sound to you?
Hi. I just found this forum, sorry if my english is bad, i'm from Finland so i might have some difficulties with the vocabulary.
I have a three yo son who is going through some massive evaluation at the neurologists daycenter. We visited in spring, it was a two-day long visit. Then they wasn't sure is my son neurotypical or what. They said that he doesn't have anything severe, but something might be wrong, and that we will see how he developes. And in december we will go again for three-day visit. We had the ADOS test at spring, and they didn't see enough clear marks of autism.
He has always been a big stimmer, has always spinned his toy car wheels, and everything that spinns. He also has spinned himself. At home he doesn't spin things much, but at the daycare or when we visit somewhere it's more excessive. He has also flapped his hands in front of his eyes much, not anymore so huge. His stims are very easy to be distracted. When he was younger it was harder to distract the stim.
He has a speech delay, speaks 2-4 word sentences but he talks little bit echolalic. His sentences are most of the time pre-learned. He doesn't usually make his own sentences.
Playing skills are somewhat delayed, he just doesn't get anything out of makebelieve play like normal children. Allthough he does imitate all actions when asked. He loves to feed teddy, put some "makeup" to the teddy and brush teeth and this kind of things. He likes to play different animals, like spider and wolf. He has huge vocabulary, wich helps. He also loves to sing! He knows all the alphabet and numbers to twenty both finnish and english. He has always had amazing memory.
"Problem" is (that the diagnose could be made) he is in great contact, never had any problems with eyecontact. He smiles, shows wide range of emotions and shares enjoyment. He is just very sweet child, and gentle. He also can spot if someone is angry, sad, happy and all other emotions. He likes other children but cant really play with toys with them. He likes all sport games with children. Sometimes i've heard from daycare, that he has a tendency to "be forgotten" alone in some corner spinning wheels. So he likes to be alone at times a day (before naptime).
So he has some red flags, but also some very positive things against autism diagnosis. I know that not every child with autism shows every red flag, but i don't think he has it. And the neurologist also said that it doesn't seem that he has autism but it's not ruled out.
How does he sound to you? Please?
