Is anyone aware of mercury-free MMR (or single shot) vaccination being available in Australia?
My understanding is that MMR is one of the few vaccines which has never had thimerasol in it. I believe this is because it is a live virus vaccine, and the mercury would kill the virus making it impotent, but I am not sure of that. Suggest you post to the FUN board and ask Margaret about this, she has a ton of info about vaccines. The fun board lik is in my posting below, "how does this board work"
The question about MMR safety is due to the triple virus in one shot. Some people think that having measles and mumps together is a very bad idea, mush the way catching measles and mumps in the same year led to a much higher percentage of complication from the native diseases. You may wish to request single shot vaccines spaced several months apart, as in vaccinate first against rubella, then 6 mos. later mumps, then 6 mos. later measles. This would be safer, if the fears of the triple vaccine shot are correct.
