Question - Autism Spectrum Message Board

Hello all... I just have a question... Has anyone ever heard of or had a child develop Autisum after losing a sibling... Such as a twin passing away... I had Girl/Boy twins... At age 5 months our little girl passed away in her sleep... Our little boy didn't cry or make any noise for almost 4 days after... Well, months went by and he developed strange habbits... He loves to play with toy cars... But, if anyone gets near them or touches him or his cars he loses control... He starts screaming shaking his head and then he runs up to his cars and starts shoving them off the coffee table or where ever they happen to be... (they are usually all over the coffee table)... I thought it was just a selfish faze... However he is fine with his other toys... Well, he doesn't want anyone to play with him at all... I Have 5 children ages 9 months, 2 (this is the son I am telling you about) 5, 8 and 9... He doesn't talk... He says mom,bye (not to clear)Jacob (JaaJaa is how he says it) and thats about it... He jabbers alot but only to himself... Also, when he is sitting on the floor watching tv he rubs his hands together constently... And when he was younger the only way that he would goto sleep was to play with his hair...Twrilling it in his fingers... Anyhow, I'm sure that is more than you want to know... Any replys would be great... Thankyou...

From what you've written, your son may indeed be autistic, or at best, has some autistic tendencies. At two years old, now is the time for special services, especially speech therapy. Check with your school board to see if they offer special education pre-school, and if so, get your son enrolled ASAP. Early intervention is crucial.

A child doesn't become autistic from a loss. I have read that some children develope autism from an enviromental insult. Out of curiosity, did your baby die of sids? I have a book called "A Shot in the Dark" many kids that died of sids had usually had there DPT during that week. I know for a fact that my sons autism was from the dpt shot. He was normal and regressed slowly after that. I read a report form a research newsletter and they said in twins, that if one had a reaction to a vaccination then the other child has a good chance of having a reaction too.

Some states have programs to evaluate children under the age of 3 and aid in obtaining services for them, most times in their natural setting. I found a website for Alaska that seems to be a good starting place for this type of information.

I contacted moderator 1 and got approval to post the website name that I found for Alaska. I hope this helps you as a starting place for obtaining information/services on getting a diagnosis and early intervention for your child. It has made a world of difference for my son in the last year. Good luck!!
