Potty Training

I have a 4-1/2 year old son with Asperger Syndrome. I am having the hardest time potty training him. He will go if I put him on the potty, but it's like he doesn't know he has to go. He tells me after he poops his pants. I have tried every trick I can think of to get him to go on his own. We have bribed him, we have taken priveledges away from him and nothing seems to work. He will be 5 in June and still in diapers. I welcome any advice anyone can give me on how to get him out of diapers.

Re: Potty Training

Have you tried keeping him in a shirt and naked from the waist down? All of my friends and relatives have used this method to potty train their kids. Everyone told me that kids do not like the mess and will not pee on the floor. I thought there is no way this will work since my little boy had never told me that he had to go potty. The first time I took off his diaper he said mommy I have to go potty. Then every time he would go I would immediately give him candy and make a big deal about it. Most kids will have a couple of accidents, but my son never had an accident when he was naked.

After about 2 weeks of him walking around the house naked I put underwear on and he had about 2 accidents before he got the hang of it. He has been completely potty trained since he was 2 and a half and has never wet the bed. Good Luck!!!!!!!

Re: Potty Training

We have never had a problem with him "holding it". My little boy drinks water constantly. I think the best time to try the naked thing for potty training is after they have a lot of liquids. I don't think my son would have ever been potty trained without this method.

They can really sense when they have to go to the bathroom. Leaving them in underwear WILL NOT WORK. Once they get wet with nothing on they do not like it. I would try it again. It can't hurt.
