Help - Autism Spectrum Message Board

I am deperately trying to find music therapy for my son. He is 3 1/2 and loves music time at school. He also can sing most of the songs on his favorite movies, with the right pitch. We are having problems getting his speech to develop I think music therapy would help this along. We are in north western Pa. Any help out there?

My son has been doing music therapy for a while now. I believe you have to go thru someone who has special training in this area (such as a occupational therapist) at least this is how we got involved. His therapy is thru Vital Sounds or Vital Links (sister Co.) I do not believe just anyone can order though. I have their phone number but I don't think I can post it here. Try searching the internet. My son is also a very good singer. He loves music also.

Hello! Occupational therapy is how my son began music therapy as well. But at home when he's upset I just play soothing music to calm him. It works lovely! -meme

Thanks fo the advice. I've contacted Vital Sounds. I tried asking his OT and teachers they haven't heard of it yet- we live in a small town. I have put music on when he gets upset and it worked while cutting his hair. Thats part of the reason I was so interested in it, if it helps with allowing me to cut his hair maybe it will help with his speech. He can already sing several songs. Thanks Much!

Best place to go is to your local Universities. They generally always have a clinic on campus which offers speech, ot and music therapy. You can also request it through your school district. If you can show that it is beneficial, and your IEP will reflect that, then your district has to provide a music therapist at your school. All of these ideas are free and at the tips of your fingers.
