Homework help?

OK Heres the deal. Caleb has always been good at memorizing things that he sees. I guess this could be good but not in this case I don't believe. He started first grade this year. Well he made a short story book at school and brought it home today. The teacher ask me to read have Caleb to read it to me. I went to point to the first word and he started saying the whole book. He didin't even look at the words. He was looking at the t.v. He also has longer books memorized by Dr. Suess like Green Eggs & Ham, The Foot book, and the Cat in the Hat. How am I going to teach him how to read more words if he memorizes them the first time its read to him? The weird thing is though he can't spell all of these words. He spells when its conveient to him I guess you can say. Words like spider-man, hulk, batman, his whole name, his sisters name, he knows how to spell all the words that rhyme and end in
at like Cat, hat , mat, rat, pat, bat, fat, mat, pat, and sat
ig like pig, wig, gig, big, dig, fig,
I think everyone pretty much know where I'm going with this post. Its just so hard for me to understand how he can do this. I mean when I was in first grade I couldn't memorize a story after the first time. I could tell you what the story was about which Caleb won't do unless he wants to. Does anyone else son or daughter do this.

Re: Homework help?

Wow! What a great gift your son has. I can see your concern about learning to read though. You will have to work very hard to find lots of books at his reading level since after one time through a book he is no longer reading but reciting. Talk to his teacher and see if she or other teachers still have books from a previous reading program. That might help keep him in "fresh" material. You'll definitely want to make friends with your local librarian. Ultimately I think his fabulous memory will help him be a better reader especially since so much of english is not phonetic.

Turn off the TV. The TV may be providing him extra stimulation and therefore may be making it hard for you to gain his attention.

Re: Homework help?

Thanks for all of the replies. He started a new reading program at school last week. They tried to mainstream him about 2 weeks ago into a regular first grade reading class he basically told the teacher he didn't like her. And he wouldn't do any work for her. He's rotten. So his special-education teacher started him on a whole reading program. He will not even write his spelling words at school he has to type them. I met the lady that was going to be a teacher to him in the first grade class she seemed like she didn't want him there. Maybe he recieved a negative vive from her so he didn't want to be around her. He only went to her class for 3 days. Its kinda sad but at the same time I know he's in very good hands with his special education teacher. She was his teacher last year too. Well I'll keep you guys updated.
