Letter of medical necessity - Autism Spectrum Message Board

just wondering if you all had to get a letter of necessity from a doctor before a evaluation was done. If so how long did it take to get it? It seems like it's taking forever for me. I've called my dr's office to see if they have sent it. All I get is answering machines...gotta love those machines.

I'm sure my dr receives lots of requests like mine. I think I"m just getting impatient.

Hi Grace with my girl her doctor said i think she has a couple of signs of Autism take her to school district special ed office for testing if you want to.I called set up appt they tested her without Dr ok.

I dont think you have to have a letter from the doctor..I sure didnt. If I had waited for my doctor, I probably wouldnt have ever gotten him therapy. You might have to take your child for the preschool screenings to get it free. The only reason I can see that you would need a letter, is if you were privately getting speech therapy for insurance purposes. It might be different in each state, I dont know for sure, but I didnt have a letter from my sons physician.take care

I think the letter is for insurance purposes because they can't schedule my appointment until they get that. It stinks big time!

You may want to see if the state has an evaluation center. My son was diagnosed by a Developmental Evaluation Center run by the state we lived in at the time. We didn't need a referal, but we did have to get on a waiting list.

Also if there's a TEEACH center in your area they will do an eval too. There may be others but I'm not familar with them.
