Stimming on movie dialog

Has anyone come up with a good way to stop a child from repeating movie or other dialog all day long. A mom I work with needs ideas. She doesn't want her son to stop talking so she doesn't want to just say "quiet voice".

Re: Stimming on movie dialog

What I learned with my son was to continue the conversation pass the phrases he was using. So he was talking alot of echoliac speech(is that what your referring to or more of an OCD trait that is not associated with echo speech?)If its echo speech keep the conversation going...he will learn to process information and speak more words. if its ocd, try to use redirection, if that doesnt work..try to go with it and continue pass what he is phrasing all day. my son couldnt talk well the first five years, so if he was interested in a subject, he would use the phrase he knew over and over again until I addressed it as a conversation. Then he would leave it alone, maybe bring it up again later and we would talk about it again. This might be his way of talking about something and needing information and guidance in his speech.Good luck

Re: Stimming on movie dialog

We have that problem with my DD, but it has gotten better. When she was about 3, most of her speech was short commercial slogans. She is 5 now and can communicate better, but those slogans and jingles are a daily part of our lives now. When she says them, we either sing the whole song, and then she goes onto somethign different, or I tell her its inside voice time and she says them under her breath. Sometimes we talk about the product she is talking about, and that helps. It can be a pain!

Re: Stimming on movie dialog

It's good to know that talking about the product/movie/program helps for you. I have experimented with it but I often don't know what he is repeating. I can encourage this mom to do it too. The "inside voice" may help but I think we need to modify it a little. Do you use "inside voice" to ask your child to lower her volume? What do you think about trying to teach him something like "inner voice"? I'm thinking maybe through social stories.
