My son Chris got brushed at school yesturday. His ot said that would help him with some of his sensory problems. Last night he had one of the worst meltdowns I have ever seen. He threw things thrashed around and yelled for me over and over. I had to practically sit on him to stop him from trashing all over the place and he pushed me off him. Does anyone have a child who gets brushed? I don't know if brushing him got him so stimuatied that he couldn't take it anymore or what? Any advice please share

My son had brushing therapy when he was two for almost a year. He never had a reaction like that with it. At the time his sensory issues were so bad, he couldn't bear to be touched by someone that wasn't me or his father. It could be that he needs some time to adjust to it. Also, we were doing the brush therapy with him too, about every 2 hours.

It's possible that the person doing your son's therapy is not experienced, or his behavior could be coincidental and something else is bothering him. Either way, it might be a good idea to communicate to the school that he had this reaction, but give it one more try to see if brushing therapy is really more than he can handle right now.

What is brushing therapy ? My non dx son has some food sensory issues and it is a nightmare trying to get his teeith brushed. He is now 26 mos and it is still a major issue. He does allow people to touch him though. Does this type of therapy address the teeth issue as well as other forms of touch ? Thanks

There is aparticular technique that needs to be followed, and the person adminstrating the protocol needs to be properly trained. I would be asking where they received training, etc....
