3 year old hitting at daycare - Autism Spectrum Message Board

Hello,

My nephew is mildly autistic, not as verbal as his age level but coming along very well with speech therapy. Lately, he has been hitting at daycare and it is becoming a problem. He apparently hits when he doesn't get a toy he wants and hits while playing with others kids, thinking that it's funny. Does anyone have any suggestions on what his mom can do and the daycare staff can do to help him learn not to hit others? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My son used to hit. The daycare over came it by keeping an eye on him to spot when he was about to be aggressive and immediately redirecting him. In my son's case they call out "big hug, Matthew" and instead of hitting he gives a hug. They rarely have to say it anymore.
