Seizures? - Autism Spectrum Message Board

My granddaughter is 9 . She has PDD. She is non-verbal.The teachers say she has times throughout the day where she is just kinda spaced out. They are checking her for seizures today. Could this be what it is?

Yes, I do think that it could be seizures. Most books say that epilepsy is more common in children with autism. Usually it doesn't come on until they are teenagers.
I also have a cousin who was never diagnosed as autistic but now I have a child with autism I am convinced that she has it also. As a child she suffered from seizures in exactly the same way you described. She was diagnosed with a form of epilepsy.

Wow this has helped me out a lot. I have noticed since my son has been diagnosed with autistic tendacies that I was the same way growing up. Which I started having seizures when I was 12 so this is something to look out for.

Hi ,My granddaughter had the test and there were no signs of seizures! The doctor said when she has these small incidents "she is just deep in thought".

That's great news about the tests being negative for seizures. I think that is right about her being deep in thought. My sons pre-school teacher has noticed that he takes up to 10 seconds to process what has been said to him. 10 seconds doesn't sound like long but if you ask someone a question and then count to ten you will see that it is quite a long time. So we thought he just wasn't listening and would repeat our questions two or more times. Now we know that it takes that long for him to process in his mind what I have asked him. I'm so glad that somebody else noticed this so I now give him alot longer to think about whatever questions I ask him.
