What is the difference between PDD and Autism?

Hi.. I am brand spanking new to this whole message board. my son has recently been diagnosed with PDD-NOS. Can someone clue me in on this.. what is it exactly. Is it autism or NOT? I havent cried yet. But I am sure I will. What I do know is that I will need some support now.

Ok, for now this is it. My son will be four August 25th.

Re: What is the difference between PDD and Autism?

Welcome to the board. I'm sure you will find it to be helpful and supportive.
Here goes...... Autism also known as Pervasive Developmental Disorder is a spectrum that ranges from mild to severe symptoms. Every child is different and how they are diagnosed is based on how impacted they are in areas of communication, social, cognitive, and motor skills.

In a diagnosis of PDD/NOS the child has delays across the board however may not be delayed in every domain to meet the classic autism diagnosis. Most of these kids have language delays, some are social some are not, some have motor skill delays, some have sensory issues, PDD/NOS is a pretty mixed bag. There are no two kids on the spectrum that are exactly the same however when you compare notes, alot of the kids have similar interests such as ABC'S, numbers, toilet flushing, water pouring.

It's not easy when you first learn that your child is on the Autistic Spectrum but you need to remember that this diagnosis will open up the doors to an appropriate education geered to helping redirect/modify some of the autistic behaviors as well as give him the additional help in school that he may need.
If you haven't done so already, I would recommend that you get in touch with your local school system to enroll him in the Special Ed preschool.

Good Luck and I hope this was somewhat helpful. Another PDD/NOS MOM

Re: What is the difference between PDD and Autism?

YIPEE, thanks for responding to me!! I don't know its so hard to know what is my son's budding personality and what is the PDD. I mean he loves to play with the sink. But I wouldnt say he has a facination with it. He doesnt have a facination with the toilet. He does enjoy his ABC's and 123's and loves to spell different words that he knows.

He likes children and is very affectionate and loves to share. He can play by himself and in a group. He is an only child so he doesnt mind playing by himself either. So I get so confused about exactly what he has. I mean he has the speech delay and the problem with fine motor skills... but, he has been in special ed pre-school for maybe 4 months.. and his speech has grown by leaps and bounds!! So I dont know what to make of this new diagnosis. However, I tend to agree with the neurologist's diagnosis.

How confusing is this??

Re: What is the difference between PDD and Autism?

I know exactly how you feel. I go back and forth the the is he isn't he PDD, and what is just typical 2. My son is 2 1/2 and had made lots of nice progress with all of his therapy so I question the dx all the time. But as one of his therapist put it last week; I am mom and unobjective, they are trained to pick up on these charactaristics and know what they are looking at.

I stopped crying once I got the dx which believe it or not was somewhat of a relief because it stopped the constant wondering. Don't get me wrong, I still do occasionally wonder however but I am better able to see him now as my son, not as " is he autistic". My son too has a wonderful personality and is very unlike what society think "Autistic" is.

My advice to you is to enjoy him for who he is; don't get caught up on the term "PDD" it just helps open the door to help him reach his full potential. I hope you find this board as helpful as I have.
