| Re: What is the difference between PDD and Autism?
Welcome to the board. I'm sure you will find it to be helpful and supportive.
Here goes...... Autism also known as Pervasive Developmental Disorder is a spectrum that ranges from mild to severe symptoms. Every child is different and how they are diagnosed is based on how impacted they are in areas of communication, social, cognitive, and motor skills.
In a diagnosis of PDD/NOS the child has delays across the board however may not be delayed in every domain to meet the classic autism diagnosis. Most of these kids have language delays, some are social some are not, some have motor skill delays, some have sensory issues, PDD/NOS is a pretty mixed bag. There are no two kids on the spectrum that are exactly the same however when you compare notes, alot of the kids have similar interests such as ABC'S, numbers, toilet flushing, water pouring.
It's not easy when you first learn that your child is on the Autistic Spectrum but you need to remember that this diagnosis will open up the doors to an appropriate education geered to helping redirect/modify some of the autistic behaviors as well as give him the additional help in school that he may need.
If you haven't done so already, I would recommend that you get in touch with your local school system to enroll him in the Special Ed preschool.
Good Luck and I hope this was somewhat helpful. Another PDD/NOS MOM
