Doctor Examination, Medication..Advise - Autism Spectrum Message Board

I have a eight year old daughter who is autistic. Last summer, the doctor started her on Buspar because she has lots of fears going to restrooms in malls or any other new place..she doesn't like going to doctor's office and resists with all her strength for examinations. She also resists going to the swing areas in parks. She was getting aggressive in school and refusing to do tasks..Buspar helped her to become compliant in school. She was a bit better going to mall restrooms..but doctor's examinations was still a nightmare. She constantly puts her fingers in her ears..probably itching sensation. To the extent that she puts stuffs like tissue paper balls by rolling them round and pushing them inside. The doctor thinks that this is behavioural issue. The paediatrician has been saying that she does not have any ear infection. She is also non-verbal and cannot express her problem. Last 4 months, she has been clearing her throat off and on. She takes my hand and puts in on her throat..indicating of some discomfort. I tried taking her to ENT two times but they refused to examine her because of the resistance she puts up for examination. Three people are needed to hold her down in order for the doctor to see her ears or any other examination..I am in a lot of dilemma as to how to solve her problem.
I would appreciate any tips/suggestions for her ENT eamination. We live in New York (SI). ARe there any doctors, ENT for special needs kids?

Her paediatrician has now changed her medication to Risperdol..he wants us to observe her behaviour for two weeks. Please let me know if you have any experience with this drug.

Have you tried Social Stories invented by Carole Gray? You can make your own for going to the doctor that explain what will happen, so she will know what to expect and not be afraid, they work wonders. How many patient has this doctor treated with autism you have a right to ask and get an answer. Also you should probably consider seeing a pediatric neurolgist, who is a specialist in autism. She puts that stuff in her ears because the acoustics in these places with all the people are too loud for her. Her brain is being over loaded with sensory sounds. Give her special ear plugs for going out, see if they work. Best Wishes! B

Maybe you could check into taking your daughter to a Childrens Hospital they have a full staff of doctors that will work with your daughter.I had to take my 9yr old daughter when she was 7 to ours in our city for a MRI she had to have sedation.She had a hard time being still at our regular hospital out patient center she was scared which is normal.Her MRI came back normal she also had a EEG normal.They did a great job .
