Throwing up

My son who is almost three and has been dig. autistic keeps pucking. I took him to the dr.s and they said he has reflux. Which he did suffer from when he was a baby, for the first yr. or so. The throwing up started up again in may. I have had him tested for milk allergy turned out neg. I had him tested cause Kemps is always sick with something. I have concidered the gfcf diet but I have serious douts that this is his problem. I know getting kids who get tested that early for allergy is not always right but..... His dr openly admits he doesn't know a WHOLE lot about the diet but stands behind me through anything I try. When he was baby we had milk and lactose and soy allergy we thought he grew out of them. I first nursed him then went to all dif formulas and ended giving him rice milk. I guess what I'm asking is has anyone else went through this? and if so what did you do? I don't know if I'm ready for the gfcf diet. Very expensive and time consuming! It sounds alot like the adkins/south beach diet ( though I know it is very different) and I have to say my husband is on that and it is not a diet but a way of life. If is rough on me the "chef".

Re: Throwing up

I know what you mean about the GFCF diet. I have been consitering it. I asked the doc. and she told me that it generally helps with kids who are lower functioning than aspergers. That with aspies, it generally doesn't help. But she has actually seen nonverbal autistics, start talking, and actually having their DX changed. As far as the stomach upset, Kyle has to go for an upper GI for the same thing. The reflux meds just arent helping, and we're actually starting to wonder if it's a stress thing with him. He was pretty good all summer,(only a small handful of incidents) and now that he's back to school, he comes home, and throws up. Maybe the school food?!

Re: Throwing up

I would strongly encourage you to try "the diet." Especially with the history of allergies to milk and soy. It is difficult at first because it is a total life style change. However, I have to say that my life is much easier with my son on the diet. The progress my son has made is so worth the effort it takes. My only regret is not starting it earlier.

I also do not find it has to be expensive. I do not go to the health food store and buy all of the substitute foods. I just eliminate them. We just eat more whole foods in their natural state and skip all of the processed food (for the most part0.

The only way to know if it will work is to try it. If it doen't work you can always stop. It is estimated that it will help more than 80% of the kids on the spectrum.

Re: Throwing up

My son had the reflux problem when he was about the same age. Even though his allergy test did not indicate an allergy to milk we took whole milk out of his diet and he stopped throwing up all the time. We switched to soy for quite awhile but then a new allergy test showed a allergy to soy, so we now use Almond Milk by Blue Diamond. The consistency is much closer to milk than soy or rice and he does fine with it. I agree that "the diet" is probably what would be best, but must admit that I too have not done it. Cutting out the milk is just a "baby step", but it sure helped.
